Last week has been my first week back doing exercise and I have really enjoyed it. Ta-dah! Recently I have felt stiff, creaky and really aware that I am sat at a desk all day. So I knew I needed to do something to get my body moving before it totally seized up! When I was at school I really enjoyed exercise and was in a few of the school teams. Somewhere along the way I lost my mojo.
The key for me is to choose an exercise that I enjoy, especially when I have had a break from doing anything. I love Zumba however the gym I go to does not do this as a class. For the first time, last week, I went to a yoga class and I loved it more far more than I thought I would do. It’s been one of those things that has been on my “I need to do list” as I have sciatica and whilst I do not suffer daily with it, when my back goes, I can’t walk for days. I do experience a lot of cramp, tingling and sometimes numbness in my leg so yoga seemed perfect. I booked the class on a Sunday night when the idea of going was still appealing and the working week had not yet distracted me.
Yoga is one of those things which some people think is really easy and not really a form of exercise. Well, let me tell you this is definitely not the case, I ached more the next day than I have done after any exercise. When in class, I stretched, moved and got a bit of a sweat on. Attractive I know! I didn’t get all of the poses or breathing right and I know that for me to really feel the full benefits that it will take a few months of working hard at it. The most amazing thing for me was how I felt after the class. I felt great, like on top of the world level of great. I came home and had a glass of Prosecco which I am sure is not the point of yoga. I felt mentally recharged. I honestly thought that it would take a few classes before I would feel any benefit. So I am definitely going to more classes and making this a priority for me.
I also got a few swimming sessions in and finished Friday with a jacuzzi as well. It’s definitely a great way to unwind at the end of the week.
Do you have any tips on yoga or how to keep exercise as a priority?
